Sharon Q. Impacted by the digital revolution , more and more academic libraries and library consortia in the United States have initialized and implemented institutional repositories.

As digital library and institutional repository have been two buzzwords focusing on the impacts of the library revolution on libraries, many administrators, executives, instructors, librarians, schoolteachers, and other professionals feel confused about the differences between these two technical terms. Therefore, it is necessary for us to explore similarities and differences between a digital library and an institutional repository.

Defined by Clifford A. From the perspective of IT specialists who have been working in different libraries, a digital library and an institutional repository can be designed and developed by the same DAM software to deliver digitized materials. A digital library is a web-based application to present original library collections transformed by multiple digital formats.

The Electronic Book: Evolution or Revolution? - E-LIS repository

An institutional repository is a web-based application that consists of a collection of digitized brochures, conference proceedings, documents, dissertations and theses, newsletters, policies, presentations, regulations, research publications, and so forth, which are submitted by the institution's administrators, committees, executives, faculty, staff, and other related contributors.

Obviously, the range and scope of the collected materials between a digital library and an institution repository is very different. A digital library focuses on its own digitized library assets while an institutional repository, though it is managed and operated by librarians and library staff, aims to serve the entire institution, instead of only the library itself.

Another important difference between a digital library and an institutional repository is that their purposes are different. A digital library is built for providing users with access to digitized archives only collected in a library. An institutional repository is set up as a knowledge base for the related knowledge management in an institution or in an organization. The latest developing trend in the field of institutional repository is to create a huge cloud knowledge base so that member institutions in a university system or a library consortium can share the same access to all the collected information.

The 'Future Book' Is Here, but It's Not What We Expected

Roberta M. Golinkoff, in Cognitive Development in Digital Contexts , We are in the midst of a digital revolution. But it is crucial to remember that electronic toys and digital media are neither savior nor Satan for children's language development. Rather, today's technology has opened up a wide range of new features and possibilities for children's play and media, and each of these affordances must be considered in the context of what research shows us about how children learn language.

Certainly, the existing research has shown some ways that these digital media can have negative effects on children's ability to learn, but if used in a thoughtful and responsible way, these sources may be able to be used to have a positive impact on language development. Indeed, given the availability of these devices in homes varying in SES, and the low cost of apps, harnessing the power of the digital revolution presents a potential intervention that could bring high-quality experiences to millions of families.

Digital media can take us to new horizons in learning more generally. For example, a digital diagram with moving parts can help us understand the cause and effect in science and the ability to zoom-in on Google Earth allows us to see what life looks like across the world. In these cases, the digital format offers real advantages over the static book or even the moving color of television.

Our challenge now is to identify how we can use digital media in new and innovative ways to promote learning. In the early years of the digital revolution, creators of children's digital media and electronic toys have spent too much time transferring our traditional options into digital formats—creating apps from books and adding sound effects and flashing lights to shape sorters.

In the second wave of the revolution, we need to instead focus on optimizing the affordances of these novel platforms so that we can fully realize their potential. It is important for future research to continue to study how language learning occurs within the context of today's increasingly digital and connected world.

Although we can make educated guesses about the utility or danger of new innovations, researchers will need to investigate how children's interactions with toys and media might change as technology blurs the lines between live and mediated interactions and between real and digital objects. Only by studying the effects of the changing world can we hope to shed light on how to use the substantial resources at our fingertips to best promote healthy development in language and beyond.

It is easy to assume that the digital revolution in electronic publishing will have made the acquisition of overseas material easier, and to some extent of course this is true, although it sets its own challenges in defining what should and should not be collected. The answer seems not yet to be the e-book. The complications of providing access to academic e-books from Anglo-American publishers are well known, with complex payment models and limited access due to digital rights management DRM. Needless to say, the state of e-book publishing worldwide is enormously variable.

A snapshot of the situation compiled by members of the Global and Area Studies Department at the Perkins Library of Duke University gives details of the state of the e-book publishing industry worldwide. The picture varies from India or Pakistan, which have almost no e-book publishing, with no national statistics available, to Japan, which is the second largest market for e-books in the world. The reasons given for lack of take-up in India and Pakistan include the high price of e-readers and tablets, although cheaper local models are starting to appear on the market.

Even once those become available, the widespread availability of pirated texts online free of charge will hold back the legal market in e-books Global ebook snapshot, Not only is this detailed information by country and region interesting and useful, but so is the fact that it has been compiled and published by the specialist area studies librarians at Duke.

It is hard to imagine anyone else having the expertise.
